Laundry and Your Trading

When I first got married, I got all the usual advice from other couples. Don’t go to bed angry. Keep the romance alive. That kind of thing.

But nobody told me about the laundry.

I went from being a single woman with maybe one or two baskets a week… to living with a typical American man who showers twice a day, hits the gym, and somehow has clothing that takes up twice the space. Now there are at least five full hampers in my house at any given time — and that’s with me doing a load every day.

It’s wild. I joke with my husband about it all the time, and he just laughs and says, ā€œYeah… nobody told you about the laundry.ā€

And honestly, he’s right. But somewhere along the way, I realized I’ve actually learned a lot from managing all this laundry… and a lot of it applies directly to trading.

Focus First

Before I met my husband, I already had my system — lights, darks, delicates, everything handled differently. His system was basically throwing everything into one load and hoping for the best!

When I first saw that, I remember thinking… this is laundry blasphemy! šŸ˜‚

So I took over the laundry. Because different materials need different handling — some shrink, some fade, some don’t even get clean unless you treat them the right way.

That sorting creates focus in doing the laundry right. And you have to focus your trading before you start.

You can’t just show up and say, ā€œI’m going to trade today,ā€ without deciding how you’re going to trade. For example, are you in and out within one session like a day trader, or are you holding overnight like a swing trader?

And then there’s the market itself. If you’re trying to trade futures, watch stocks, and keep an eye on crypto all at the same time, you’re basically doing the same thing as mixing all your laundry together — and the poor results usually reflect that.

There’s Always More…

Here’s something I had to accept pretty quickly — there is always going to be dirty laundry. Unless I wake up in the middle of the night and wash everything before my husband even gets out of bed, there will always be another hamper waiting.

That’s just life. And trading works the same way.

There will always be more to do in trading.

There’s always another chart, another setup, another piece of news, another move you could have taken. You’re never going to cover everything, especially if you want to have a life outside of trading.

So instead of trying to do it all, decide what actually matters to you and focus on that. That’s where your results start to come from.

A Trade Has a Full Cycle Lifespan

Doing the laundry isn’t just about starting the washing machine. There’s everything that comes after — drying the clothes completely, folding and storing them conveniently, so that you can grab and go with confidence.

I learned this the hard way with wool. Even on the lowest setting, it doesn’t belong in the dryer — so yes, I hang dry my wool socks now.

In the same way, a trade starts with entering, and its lifespan begins.

Entry is just one phase. There’s management, decision-making, and eventually the exit — what I think of as the full lifespan of a trade.

If you only focus on getting in, you’re missing most of the process. You need a plan for what happens after the trade is placed, and you can build that over time without needing to have everything perfect right away.

Build Your System Over Time

Now, do I always stay on top of the laundry? No. Sometimes I fall behind, and suddenly there’s a massive pile of clean clothes sitting on the bed.

When that happens, I put on music or a show and have what I call a ā€œlaundry party.ā€ It gets done.

You’re allowed to grow into your process.

You don’t need everything figured out from day one. You just need something you can follow — something that helps you feel more in control — and then you refine it as you go.

At the end of the day, I could hire someone to handle the laundry, but I like having control over it. And even though nobody warned me about it early on, I’ve built a system that works — and trading really isn’t that different.
