When Life Gets Unpredictable… Your Trading Doesn’t Have To

Let’s take a moment to reflect on something that can feel even more stressful than trading while wars are brewing across the world.

An unexpected family visit 😉

I’m half joking, half dead serious.

Because whether it’s immediate family or extended, when someone arrives on short notice, it can create a flurry of activity.

And I experienced that back in September.

We had talked for a long time about my mom leaving New York and making Austin her home base with my husband and me. But with the pandemic and everything that followed, we stalled on moving forward for years.

So I invited her to visit, and she stayed for about two and a half weeks.

Now, the length of time wasn’t really the issue. It was that I wasn’t fully prepared for what it meant to have a long-term guest. Up until then, I had only ever hosted people for a weekend or a few days. Weeks at a time was a completely different ballgame.

There were a lot of moving pieces all at once—household chores, things we needed to buy, areas that needed to be organized. And it’s the kind of stuff that feels overwhelming in the moment. But if you step back, you realize something important.

If you do it once—and you do it right—it stays in place. Just like a trading system.

Fast forward to now.

Within the past week, we booked another trip for my mom to come visit us in Austin—and this time, she’s staying for a full month, yay!

You might think that would cause a bit of a freak-out for me, especially as the hostess.

But honestly, I’ve been relatively calm.

And the reason is simple. The systems are already in place.

i get my house cleaned every two weeks on a schedule. I keep guest-specific bedding and towels washed and ready so there’s just a 5 minute room setup. A lot of the prep is already optimized.

There were still things to reset or items to restock. But instead of feeling overwhelming, it was something I could take care of over a few days.

Your trading works the same way.

There are always unexpected twists and turns—not just in the market, but in your life. Sometimes it’s external, like geopolitical events. Sometimes it’s personal—getting sick, a work deadline.

And even when the events are positive—like a family member visiting—they can still throw you out of sync.

That is, if you don’t have systems in place.

Without systems, those moments can completely disrupt your trading. With systems, you have something to fall back on.

So take a moment to reflect on this.

Look at your life. Look at your trading. Where do you already have systems in place—and where are you still reacting in the moment?

Because the goal isn’t to control everything. It’s to be prepared enough that when things shift, you can stay steady.

More even-keeled. More grounded in your process.

And that’s what allows you to keep showing up at your best, no matter what’s going on around you.
