What Needs to Be True?

I’ve recently joined a Bollywood dance group that’s performing all over Austin this Diwali season.

Now, to those who don’t know me well, this might sound like something I do all the time — like, “Oh, that’s just one of Hima’s fun hobbies.”
But here’s the truth: I haven’t danced like this in years.

Sure, there’s the occasional moment of putting out the moves at a wedding, but I’m well past my clubbing era — and definitely my rave era!

But the funny thing is… I used to dance. Like, really dance.

My parents started me in classical Indian dance when I was three years old.
Then came tap, ballet, jazz — I even danced through college and competitions and more.

The Question That Changed Everything

When I heard about this Bollywood dance group, I initially thought what many of us adults do:
“I don’t have time.”

But in August, I asked myself one question that shifted everything.
It’s the same question you can ask when you’re struggling to make time for something that matters — in life or in trading.

Here it is:

What needs to be true so that…?

That fill-in-the-blank question removes impossibility from the equation.

Because if you really want to do something, and you ask that question honestly, you’ll find a way to make it happen.

So of  course I could join a Bollywood dance group.
I just needed to make certain things true.

The first thing I did was look at my calendar.
Practices are weekday evenings, performances on Saturdays.

So, I cleared those dates as far in advance as I could — protecting the time made it possible.

Next, I needed to make sure my meetings and training sessions didn’t conflict.

I talked to my personal trainer, rearranged gym sessions, and shifted a few calls.
That took care of the schedule side.

And here we are, two months later — I’m absolutely loving it.
We’ve already had one performance and more coming up.

The amount of joy this side hobby brings me is amazing.
I’m so glad that I did what I needed to to make it so that that could be true.

Apply This to Your Trading

Where in your trading could you ask this same question?

  • What needs to be true so that you have time to build your trading plan?
  • What needs to be true so that you can actually study the course you invested in?
  • What needs to be true so that you regularly review your trades — instead of skipping it?
  • What needs to be true so that journaling becomes a habit, not an afterthought?

Most of these aren’t really time problems — they’re system problems.

I heard something recently that resonated:
We’re not born disciplined or undisciplined.
Discipline is the result of systems we build.

The Real Lesson

For me, joining this dance group — and getting all its physical and social benefits — just required a few small shifts:

  • Re-prioritizing my time
  • Putting new systems in place
  • And asking that one simple question

What needs to be true so that I can do what I say I want to do?

I hope this gives you something to think about — in your trading, and in your life.

As I’m sharing this, earnings season is in full swing.
I’ll be diving into more video-based content soon — yes, my long-form YouTube channel is waking up!

So stay tuned.
And remember to ask yourself:
What needs to be true so that you can do what you really want to do?
