In my latest posts, I shared how we can control more than we think — and why investing in mindset pays off before you even place a trade.
Now I want to take you inside the exercise Tony Robbins shared at his virtual event this past spring. At first, it felt like a little “bonus gift” tucked into a long session. But once I tried it, it became one of the most impactful rituals I’ve ever added to my trading.
It’s called the Four Archetypes. And the story of how Tony used it with UFC champion Conor McGregor is what pulled me in.
Mindset Battle
Tony told us about a time when Conor McGregor — one of the fiercest fighters in the UFC — hit a slump.
His team had gone through everything: his training routine, his diet, his recovery. Physically, he was still one of the best in the world. But something was off when he stepped into the ring.
That’s when Tony was brought in. He knew the missing piece wasn’t physical — it was mental. So he sat with Conor and asked him: What are you thinking and feeling before a fight? What’s running through your mind when you lose compared to when you win?
That line of questioning led into the exercise Tony calls the Four Archetypes.
Archetype #1: The Warrior
The first one is the Warrior.
For Conor, that was easy to picture. His Warrior was fierce, relentless, unstoppable. Tony had him close his eyes and imagine his Warrior in detail — the colors, the sounds, even where he felt it in his body. Then he asked him: What does your Warrior say to you when you’re at your absolute best?
Conor spoke it out loud. Tony pushed him to say it louder. With full force. Until it wasn’t just words, but energy flowing through his whole body.
Sitting at my desk during the event, I thought: Okay, this feels a little crazy to do on my own. But I tried it anyway.
I let my inner warrior speak to me, saying the words out loud but just under my breath at first. Then I repeated them with more power. And I could feel something starting to move inside me. So I kept going.
Your Warrior is the part of you that represents the drive to act, that fuels your strength and courage, and that allows you to overcome obstacles.
Archetype #2: The Magician
The second archetype is the Magician.
This one isn’t about brute strength. It’s about that sense of flow and intuition that sometimes feels almost supernatural. The Magician is what lets you see openings, adapt in the moment, and trust your instincts.
Tony walked Conor through the same steps: assign the Magician a color, a sound, a place in the body. Then ask: What is your Magician whispering to you before the fight?
When I tried this myself, I was surprised by what came up. It wasn’t something I thought of consciously. It just bubbled up — and it was exactly what I needed to hear that day before trading.
By the time I’d done both Warrior and Magician, I felt different. More grounded. More ready.
Now, almost every morning between 9:00 and 9:05, I’ll run through the exercise before I trade the S&P 500 futures. Sometimes it takes five minutes, sometimes ten. Either way, it sets me up with both strength and adaptability — two qualities that make all the difference in fast markets.
When I step into the market as both Warrior and Magician, I’m calmer, sharper, and more confident in my edge.
Try It Yourself
I’m not claiming this exercise as mine. Tony taught it freely, and you can Google “Tony Robbins Four Archetypes” if you want to dive deeper into the many teachings that span into the past on this concept.
But here’s what I’d suggest for now:
- Picture your Warrior. What does it look like, sound like, feel like?
- Picture your Magician. What does it whisper to you before you act?
Play with those questions. See how they feel.
In my next post, I’ll share the other two archetypes — the Lover and the Sovereign — and how they sealed this practice into my daily trading routine.
