With America's 250th birthday coming up, I've been thinking about something that ties both into trading and what I love about this country.
And it starts with kids looking to make summertime cash.
The Simple Start
Do these kids go knocking on the door of Tropicana or Minute Maid looking for a job in the juice factory? Of course not.
They simply set up a lemonade stand.
Before they even sell their first glass, they just make a few simple decisions:
Where do we want to set up?
What hours do we want to sell?
What kind of lemonade do we want to offer?
They don't have every answer figured outāthey just have enough to get started.
Your trading really isn't much different.
I think a lot of traders get stuck because they try to build these elaborate trading plans before they ever really begin. They stay in the ideation phase for so long that they delay getting the information they actually need to improve.
But all you need out of the gate is to decide what security you want to trade, what sessions fit your schedule, and what basic approach you want to test. Those first decisions don't have to be perfect because they're simply getting you to the next stage, which is where the real information comes from.
The Value of Testing
Back to the kids and their lemonade stand, they set up shop, holler down the street, and business is underway.
The kids start observing how sales go, and testing is so important.
Maybe they start with classic lemonade, but people ask if it could be a little less sweet.
Maybe neighborhood customers comment on the temperature and they realize they need more or less ice.
Maybe they keep getting asked if they have different flavors.
Every one of those observations leads to an adjustment.
That's exactly what happens in your trading.
As you gain experience, you start figuring out what information you want to use. Maybe it's Price Action. Maybe adding Time or Momentum helps your decision-making. You start noticing which setups work best for you, where your stops should go, or even that your personality fits the morning session much better than the afternoon.
Those aren't things you discover by sitting at your desk trying to think harder about your trading plan. You discover them because you're actively testing.
Over time, you make one adjustment after another. It's still just your trading plan, just like for the kids it's still a lemonade stand. The difference is that now it's a better lemonade stand because you've earned those improvements through market feedback.
Eventually you have enough information to decide what's next. Maybe you keep doing it for the rest of the summer. Maybe you will come back next year. Maybe you expand into something bigger. Whatever you decide, you've reached that point because you actually gathered data instead of guessing what might work.
Lemonade And the Pursuit of Trading Happiness
A neighborhood lemonade stand is one of the most entrepreneurial things I can think of, and to me it's part of what makes America, America.
As the first person in my entire family to be born outside of India, and in this great country, I'm personally just so thankful for everything America has provided me and my family. One of the greatest gifts is the freedom we have to pursue happiness and decide what that pursuit looks like for ourselves.
For many of us, trading is part of that adventure.
Maybe it's keeping your mind active during retirement, supplementing your income so you can retire a little earlier.
Maybe it's taking that next family vacation, or buying a boat.
Maybe itās retiring your spouse, or creating more opportunities for your children or grandchildren.
There are so many different ways that freedom is explored in this country.
As we head into the July 4th weekend and celebrate America's 250th birthday, I hope all of my fellow Americans have a wonderful Independence Day.
And remember the lesson from the neighborhood lemonade stand.
You don't have to build the whole system before you begin. Start with your version of a lemonade stand. Build a simple trading plan, test it, keep making adjustments, and let it grow from there.
š PS ā Happy 4th of July! š
As the first person in my family to be born here in America, this holiday has always meant a lot to me.
I'd love to know…what does the pursuit of happiness look like for you these days? How is trading part of that picture?

Well Hima, you said you always enjoy reading our stories. I rarely respond to anyone online outside of business. I want to tell you why I am trading albeit not well at all. The Holy Bible which I believe says that the “wealth of the rightious is laid up in the hands of the wicked”. I am a rightious man and I want to take back what was stolen from me and my family as well as my ancestors. I thought trading securities was a way. I also wanted the way to be simple enough for me to teach my children and grandchildren so they could continue my work after I AM GONE. I have read, studied, purchased programs about trading, etc., but nothing so far. I was intringed by listening to your first promo. You said your RSI would identify the direction of the next move even before it happened. Of course I am paraphrasing. I actually tried it and it worked. Since then, my life has been in turmoil, switching from one strategy to another. I had to take on the role of my wife's caretaker as I watched her life slip by. I simply have not been able to devote myself to the art of trading. You strike me to be a really sincere person who is trying to teach us how to be profitable. You are not one of these online hacks in it for the money alone. Hima, I have no idea why I have written this note to you. I hope I can regain the pursuit of happiness and have a better story.

Ben, thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and for your kind words. I'm so glad this article resonated with you. I think we all need the reminder from time to time that we don't have to build the whole factoryāwe can start with the lemonade stand and keep moving forward one step at a time. Wishing you all the best on your trading journey, and thank you for being part of our Trading Tribe! ā Hima
