“If you move too fast, you’ll miss things.”
When I heard the speaker at a women’s networking event say that this week, immediately I thought… yep.
Because lately, I’ve been in a very go, go, go mode. Some of that has been exciting. We’re building my first trading software right now, we’ve got beta users inside, and things are moving!
And I love that kind of momentum (pun intended). But like you, I’m a human being, not a machine. There’s a point where pushing stops being productive and starts costing you.
My Car Accident Reality Check
That limit showed up for me last weekend.
I was doing what a lot of us do—trying to squeeze in one more thing, one more errand, one more stop, just trying to be “efficient.” Instead, it resulted in a minor parking lot accident at Trader Joe’s.
I honestly cannot remember the last time I caused any kind of vehicle accident. Decades, probably. So yes, I did what you’re supposed to do. Pulled back into a parking spot, spoke to the other driver, exchanged information, called insurance – spending my Saturday evening adulting.
Psychologically, it really shook me. I kept thinking, How did I let this happen?
Then a few days later, I heard that phrase: If you move too fast, you’ll miss things.
That was it.
Because it wasn’t really about driving. It was about all the things.
When you’re mentally overloaded, physically tired, or emotionally stretched, you miss things. Sometimes that’s a detail in life. Sometimes it’s a decision in trading. Sometimes it’s a vehicle right behind you.
Track Your Mood
So here are a few things I did this week that genuinely helped.
The first is really simple: actually check in with myself. Not what’s next. Not what still needs to get done. Just… How do I actually feel right now?
I’ve been experimenting with setting reminders to do this, and I also started trying an app called Daylio. It’s simple emoji-based mood tracking, with one end being “Awful”, one end being “Rad”, and a simple range in between.
You can also quickly note things like sleep, food, activities, and daily habits. That’s it. No giant self-improvement project. No journaling marathon.
That simplicity is part of why I’m willing to actually use it. Sometimes the first step is just noticing where you are before you hit the wall.
Boost Your Energy
The second thing I started thinking more about was my nervous system.
Because we all have different stress thresholds, and for me, one thing that has helped on and off over the years is Qigong.
I first learned about it at a business mastermind retreat in Cabo years ago from my friend Lee Holden, here’s the 4-minute video I shared from the beach>>
This week I picked it back up. Just a simple 10-minute morning routine.
Here’s that routine: Morning Qi Gong 10 Min Exercise
And I could already feel the difference. I’m steadier in my approach to the day.
I still get tired after mental or physical output. Just not to the point where I can’t see a car behind me!
Check Your Boundaries
People hear “boundaries” and think of conflict, awkward conversations, or hurting someone’s feelings. But sometimes it’s much simpler than that.
My mom is visiting right now, and she’s becoming more independent here in Austin—driving herself to yoga and nearby groceries.
One night she mentioned wanting to go to Costco, which is a good 15 minute drive. Normally, I probably would have just gone with her, even if I was tired and didn’t really want to.
But instead, I said I wanted to rest and work on some things, and she was welcome to take the car on her own.
And she did.
Successfully!
Shopping at Costco is something she’s done thousands of times over decades. This was just a different store on different roads.
That was a surprisingly big moment for me.
Because sometimes we spend energy solving things other people are fully capable of handling—not because they need us to, but because we assume we should.
Protecting your energy matters.
One Small Trading Tie-In
I’m not trying to force this into some giant trading metaphor.
But I do think traders can relate to this because trading tends to attract driven people. People who want progress. People who like to move forward.
That’s a good thing—until it catches up with you.
Because when you’re mentally fried, you miss information. You rush decisions. You force things. You stop operating like yourself.
Last Friday, I felt like an exhausted zombie.
Today, I feel stable. Rested. Able to enjoy the long weekend and still work if I want to.
That’s a very different place to make decisions from.
So if you’ve been in that mode lately, this is your reminder to slow down a little before life does it for you.
Because if you move too fast, you’ll miss things.
